Memorabilia |
Elizabeth Lucy Hely was born in London in 1870. Her father, James Joseph Hely, had a confectionary business which continued until well into the 20th century. He married her mother, Tamson Deane, in 1861 and they had nine children. Most of them were roped in to work for the family business for at least some part of their lives, as were some of the grandchildren. Elizabeth married Henry James Burgess in 1890 and they had six children: five sons and one daughter. In the photograph she is flanked by sons Reginald (born 1897) and Harold (b. 1907) with her granddaughter, Sylvia (b. 1927), next to her father, my "Uncle Reg". The other four children were Albert (b. 1893), Lucy Elizabeth (b. 1899), Frederick (b. 1900) and Cyril (b. 1909). Elizabeth died in January 1934. The cause of death was valvular disease of the heart.
