|The Hely Family|
Elizabeth Lucy Hely was born in London in 1870. Her father, James Joseph Hely, had a confectionary business which continued until well into the 20th century. He married her mother, Tamson Deane, in 1861.
Elizabeth married Henry James Burgess in 1890 and they had six children: five sons and one daughter. In the photograph she is flanked by sons Reginald (born 1897) and Harold (b. 1907) with her granddaughter, Sylvia, next to her father, my "Uncle Reg". The other four children were Albert (b. 1893), Lucy (b. 1899), Frederick (b. 1900) and Cyril (b. 1909).
Elizabeth's home in 1909: 9 Clifton Square, Peckham. Standing outside are three of her children: Albert, Harold and Lucy Elizabeth. Lucy died of pulmonary tuberculosis in 1927, aged 28. Her mother died seven years later, in January 1934.
